Refusing to Fade.
Prospecting for Gold
Living Out Loud.
I am a boomer elder — and I refuse to disappear quietly. After more than six decades on Mother Earth, the fragility of life is no longer theoretical.
It is personal. It is sharp. It is motivating. It is inspiring.
These are not golden years to waste.
I am a boomer elder and reject the idea that us elders are meant to sit on the sidelines, scroll through other people’s adventures, shrink our lives, mute our voices, and politely make room. I reject emotional, spiritual, and social isolation disguised as “retirement.” I reject invisibility.
Why gold prospecting ?
I am a boomer elder and will be prospecting for gold flakes and nuggets,
in the remote wilderness of northern Labrador.
Gold has always been more than metal. Gold is value. Value is age.
And age is what remains after many decades of pressure, hardship, and patience.
We elders are told our value is behind us.
I say our gold is still being uncovered.
The Expedition
As a boomer elder, I will sail single-handed from Ottawa to northern Labrador — with my dog Lucy as crew and companion. From there, I will explore an unnamed river and its tributaries, traveling more than 130 km inland by foot and electric off-road bike, prospecting for gold in some of the most remote terrain left on the map. This journey is physical, mental, and spiritual. It is about risk, preparation, endurance and humility before nature, and listening to the land and to myself.
It is not about proving anything to anyone. It is about refusing elder erasure.
Why This Matters Now
Our culture and our zeitgeist is deeply uncomfortable with aging.
Elders are often ignored, dismissed, or politely pushed out of relevance
so others can live guilt-free.
I believe elders are needed now more than ever — not as ornaments, but as active participants, storytellers, teachers, explorers, and truth-tellers.
We elders are not done.
We elders are not ornamental.
We elders are not past our prime.

My free blog is a living record of the expedition — the planning, the risks, the setbacks, the discoveries, and the moments of awe. It is also a place for reflection on aging, courage, purpose, and what it means to keep choosing life.
I am not offering polished answers, I am offering an honest experience.
If you’re an elder who feels restless, unseen, or underestimated - this is for you.
If you are younger and wondering what aging could look like - pay attention.
If you believe life is meant to be lived fiercely, right to the end - welcome.

I am prospecting for gold at the end of the rainbow.
Not because I expect to get rich —but because
seeking is better than settling, and shining is better than fading.
I hope this extreme solo expedition undertaken by a regular boomer elder will help shine a bright golden light on all elders in Canada who are subject to ongoing neglect, abuse and poverty!
This boomer elder is not leaving quietly!!!
